Current Research: The role of universities in regional development; The future of the city region in Germany; Military conversion, innovation and regional development Additional Background: For two decades he has monitored urban development trends and policies in Europe and based on his research in this field is a frequent speaker at international conferences on European urban and regional development. Has served as a policy advisor to the European Commission and the Council of Europe, as well as to Governments in Nepal, Malawi, Brazil and the Yemen Arab Republic on behalf of GTZ (German Technical Cooperationn program). More recently, upon request of the European Commission, he has been advising studies for the future of London and Berlin. As a visiting professor he has been among others, at the Institut Français d' Urbanisme of the Université Paris VIII (1990), the ORL-Institut of the ETH Zürich/Switzerland (1992), the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning of the University of California, Los Angeles (1993), and the Departmment of City and Regional Planning of the University of Cardiff, Wales (1998/2002).
